BIMM Institute

OPENED back in 2017 by Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi, BIMM Institute Birmingham is located in Digbeth, the city’s most exciting and creative quart.

Birmingham’s undeniable musical heritage meets the very best modern technology and equipment in our Floodgate Street facilities.

Birmingham is the birthplace of many musical legends; heavy metal titans Black Sabbath and Judas Priest and rock icons Electric Light Orchestra and in recent years Laura Mvula, Lady Leshurr and Jaykae have been paving the way for the next generation of musical talent. This musical heritage and dynamic local music scene is fuelled by some of the best new independent music venues and experimental artists that continue to push boundaries.

Birmingham is also home to the youngest population in Europe. With its unrivalled nightlife and clubs, world-class library facilities and programme of inner city festivals, this is a city that’s made for its students.

At BIMM Institute you will be surrounded by fellow music lovers, all supporting each other and collaborating as you navigate through the industry together. Whether you study performance, songwriting or a music business focused course you’ll have the chance to perform and work at our end of term gigs, label showcases and other industry opportunities that feature the best talent BIMM Institute offers – all organised by our dedicated careers team.

Our masterclasses are a chance to get face-to-face with industry professionals and ask them all of your burning questions. BIMM Institute Birmingham has had Mabel, MNEK, and even Tito Jackson pass through its doors for a masterclass.

Our College Principal, Antony Greaves, is an established music figurehead and industry expert. He has worked as a technical manager at the world-famous Mayfair Recording Studios throughout his glowing career, working with artists such as U2, Travis, and Kylie Minogue. Antony was also widely regarded for pioneering the UK’s first electronic music production degree and as a development consultant and author of the world’s first music production graded syllabus, which is now delivered in 42 countries worldwide.

You will be surrounded by state-of-the-art facilities. These include fully-loaded Mac suites, multiple performance rooms with industry-standard equipment, and a green screen room. The studio Apple Mac Pro comes equipped with industry standard software packages such as Logic Pro, Ableton Live, Native Instruments, Melodyne and hundreds of third-party plugins. This is alongside multi-million pound, professional recording studios. Our studios were designed using the combined expertise of College Principal Antony Greaves, BIMM lecturers, The Studio People and Audient.

The professional space features superior treatments such as ‘live end – dead end’ arrangement, adjustable acoustics, bass traps, absorption panels and reclaimed wood Schroeder diffusers. These turn the studio’s live room into a versatile, high-quality environment for professional-level sound capture.
