Newman University

At Newman you will be welcomed, supported and challenged to achieve your true potential. Staff at Newman will encourage you to discuss debate and understand your subject, as well as wider world issues, helping you to build your confidence in presenting your own ideas.

Coming to university is an exciting and inspiring time in anyone’s life, and choosing the right university and course is a crucial decision to make – but it needs to be somewhere where you feel you will fit in and make new friends.

A spokesperson said: “At Newman we base education on the values of social justice, personal development and the common good. This is in line with our Patron Blessed Cardinal John Henry Newman, a visionary thinker, who developed the ideas of what a university should be.

Founded in 1968 as a teacher training college, Newman has now grown to offer a variety of courses

“The ethos and values which underpin the university enable students from all backgrounds and faiths to learn together in a supportive and friendly community, of
learning and teaching.”

In 1968 Newman University began as a teacher training college in Bartley Green and celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Since those early years the university has gone from strength to strength and has developed its courses in line with the changing needs of students and employers.

Courses range from accounting, business, counselling, criminology, drama, early childhood studies, education, maths, health and social care, psychology, forensic psychology, theology, English, history, social science, working with children young people and families and youth and community work. The Faculty of Education offers an extensive range of teacher training courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Why study at Newman University?

The university is right on your doorstep with public transport links across the West Midlands. Newman is near enough to Birmingham for nights out and shopping,
but far enough away to be able to concentrate on studying and getting involved in your learning opportunities.

The university has invested £22m in upgrading the lecture theatres, and learning and teaching environments with additional spaces for students to socialise,
and work on projects and group work in comfortable and relaxed spaces. In 2018, new halls of residence opened, providing additional en-suite living accommodation.

A single campus means that it is easier and quicker to learn the layout of the university, with more chance of bumping into friends and familiar faces, which is especially comforting in the first few weeks. The small class sizes and community feel benefit those who enjoy learning in small groups and through
interactive teaching. Students get to know their tutors, and the tutors know them – tutors will help individuals in their learning journey, with additional support
if it is needed – through careers, student support, library services and IT.

Students are taught by experts in their field. Academic staff are keen to share this knowledge with students to develop knowledge, understanding and the sharing of ideas. Newman has high levels of graduate employment, as career skills are part of the core curriculum.

Work placements are completed on all undergraduate three-year courses. Students are offered a real chance to get involved in the life of the university. Whether this is through voluntary work in the community, or through the many opportunities that the university offers, everyone has the same opportunities.

Find out more about the university by coming along to an open day, where staff and students will give you their honest opinions of what life at Newman University
is like.

The open days are on: Saturday, June 23 from 10am – 3pm; Saturday, July 7 from 10am to 3pm; Saturday, October 13 from 10am to 3pm and Friday, November 9 from 4pm to 8pm.

The spokesperson added: “We look forward to welcoming you to our university, which could be your university.”
