PROVIDING FIRST-CLASS MUSICAL THEATRE AND ACTING TRAINING TO CREATE INNOVATIVE AND VERSATILE PERFORMERS WITHABRIGHT FUTURE ON STAGE AND SCREEN

Performers College Birmingham

LEADING professional training institute Performers College has launched a new campus in Birmingham, offering specialist vocational courses in musical theatre and acting.

Aspiring actors, singers and dancers throughout the Midlands are being offered the opportunity to audition for professional performance training at one of the UK’s longest standing and most prestigious performing arts colleges.

Founded over 30 years ago within their purpose-built campus in Essex, Performers College has established an outstanding reputation, becoming known as a leading provider of exceptional training, and for nurturing fantastic graduates.

Performers College offers a BA (Hons) in Musical Theatre and Dance, and a BA (Hons) in Acting for Stage, Screen & Digital Media, training students to be innovative and creative versatile performers.

Students are taught by the highest-level industry professionals and undertake an intensive vocational training in all disciplines. Performers College alumni enjoy successful and varied careers in the performing arts industry, and can be seen regularly in West End musicals and plays, national tours, music videos, arena concerts, TV dramas and feature films.

This year the college underwent an exciting expansion, and welcomed its first cohort of students to its brand-new campus in Birmingham, creating a new and vibrant community in the heart of the city’s creative quarter, Digbeth. Performers College Birmingham’s Principal Adam Davenport said:“I am really proud to be heading up Performers College Birmingham, bringing our firstclass musical theatre and acting training to the heart of the Midlands. “Birmingham is the perfect location for our second campus, as performing arts has long been a strong sector in the Midlands, hosting some of the country’s biggest regional theatres and venues.

“With our strong industry links coupled with Performers College’s outstanding reputation for producing multi-skilled graduates for over 30 years, I’m confident we will be an exciting addition to the Midlands performing arts scene.

“For those whose ambition is to train vocationally, but may be concerned about living costs in London, we hope this widens the opportunity for local aspirant performers, who may now be able to train professionally whilst living at home.”

All Performers College students hit the ground running with a year focused on core technical skills. For Musical Theatre students there is intensive training in ballet, tap, jazz and contemporary, alongside classes in musical theatre, acting and technical singing.

Acting students focus on fundamental techniques for stage and screen performance including improvisation, voice and text, plus specialist workshops in TV presenting, motion capture for video games, and appearances on episodes of the college podcast. Meanwhile industry professionals come to the college on a weekly basis to build up students’ understanding of how the industry functions. What Performers College also pride themselves on is that they care about the development of students not just as performers, but also as individuals.

“The fundamental thing about our training culture and ethos,” Davenport adds, “is that we believe you can have discipline, rigour and high-level professional expectations of people, alongside kindness and an atmosphere of collaboration, fun and laughter. Those things can coexist. “We expect the highest standards from our students, but within an environment where people feel valued, respect one another, feel safe to express themselves, to experiment and to create.”

In second year students begin to specialise according to their skills and interests, and the final year builds towards full productions and agent showcases. “Life at Performers is incredibly fast-paced, and there are a lot of intensive training hours,” continues Davenport. “All students work incredibly hard and by the time they’ve been through that evolution they are completely ready to immerse themselves in the professional environment of dance, theatre, film and TV.”
