OVER the past 10 years Shireland Sixth Form has steadily grown, becoming a vibrant place to study, with over 26 A-level and BTEC subjects to choose from.
Shireland has a national reputation for using technology to support students to make rapid progress in learning and for innovations in teaching and learning.
“The sixth form represents the final stage of formal education and as such is the passport to the future,” explains Mr Dave Irish, Principal for Shireland Collegiate Academy
“Therefore, our sixth form programme supports and develops not only our students’ academic progress but also gives many opportunities to develop new skills through our Futures programme, work experience and many other extracurricular programmes, including Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award, an extensive Performing Arts schedule, pre-med programme and opportunities to become involved in student leadership. Our dedicated sixth form block also offers the opportunity for students to work independently whilst all our subjects boast world class facilities for teaching, including a theatre that was constructed with the Birmingham Hippodrome. All students receive a laptop to support their learning.
“Our sixth form will help to develop the levels of independence that are required to be successful. We help students decide what the next steps will be, whether that is university, apprenticeship or stepping into the world of work.”
Our results speak for themselves. In summer 2020 we attained 100% pass rate in all our main curriculum subjects, with 57% A*-B grade; 6 of our students attained straight A*/A grades.
This meant many of our students progressed on to their first choice at university, reading a wide range of subjects including medicine at Imperial College London, law at Bristol University and civil engineering at University of Bath to name but a few.
During these recent challenging times Shireland Sixth Form continues to provide a secure, supportive working environment, whether that is face-to-face in lessons or remotely using online lessons.
“Our students receive their own laptop to use whilst they are in sixth form, which gives them unrivalled access to tailormade online resources, designed by their teachers,” explains Mrs Denise Fox, Head of Sixth Form.
“Our reputation for this level of support and use of up-to-date technology are just two of the reasons why we are receiving an increased number of applications by students from across the local area.
“This is often from personal recommendation by family and friends. I am proud of the happy, vibrant sixth form we offer and would encourage anyone thinking of applying to do so, we would love to hear from you.”
